NJ Lottery

“Give your dreams a chance” is the motto of the New Jersey lottery. Thousands and thousands of New Jersey residents flock to their local grocery store and other places that sell lottery tickets just for a chance at winning the jackpot. Each and every night, these NJ residents then take their lottery tickets and hope they win the nightly drawings, which are shown twice a day, seven days a week all year round.

What also makes the NJ lottery so popular is the many games and variations of the lottery available. The New Jersey lottery has six games for lottery players to choose from: the Pick-3, Pick-4, Jersey Cash 5, Pick-6 Lotto, the Mega Millions and even the Powerball. Jersey lottery players may have a preferred game, or choose to play more than one. Sometimes, a dedicated NJ lottery player may pick all of these games to play at once.

About the NJ Lottery

The NJ lottery made its debut in 1971; the same year Disney World opened, as well as Intel’s introduction of the world’s first microprocessor. During the very first New Jersey lottery, a million dollars was given away to a lucky winner in the state. The rest, as they say, is history; more and more jackpot prizes and game variations have been introduced since then.

The NJ lottery also abides by all laws and regulations that govern the lottery business. The NJ lottery headquarters is located in the Lawrence Township of Mercer County in New Jersey, and is currently governed by the laws set by the New Jersey Department of Treasury. The New Jersey lottery is run by over 150 employees dedicated to the fairness and equality of each and every lottery drawing.

The New Jersey Lottery Games

Residents of New Jersey have more than just the Powerball and Mega Millions to choose from. Casual lottery players may only buy tickets for one or two kinds of games, while more dedicated players may choose to play all of the games. Some may even buy multiple tickets for one kind of game just to increase their chances of winning.

  1. Pick-3 – This is a three-digit draw game and was introduced in 1975, and maintained a daily presence on New Jersey’s airwaves since then. Winners are picked when players have numbers on their lottery tickets that are matched with the numbers drawn during drawing sessions. Winners must match at least two numbers in order to win a cash prize.
  2. Pick-4 – This game was introduced in 1977, and is also drawn two times daily. In the Pick-4, players must have all 4 digits matched to the drawn numbers. An exact match on all four numbers means that a jackpot is won, while 4 matched numbers in any order will win a box wager.
  3. Jersey Cash 5 – This Jersey-exclusive lottery game began in 1992, and still remains popular with New Jersey residents today. In this game, players must pick five numbers from a pool of 40, and must also be matched to the numbers picked at drawings. The jackpot here is a rolling cash prize, meaning that if no winners are picked in the first draw, the cash prize is added to the next drawing. The Jersey Cash 5 is also drawn 7 days a week.
  4. Pick-6 Lotto – Venturing into millionaire territory, the Pick-6 lotto is only drawn on Monday and Thursday evenings. The jackpot, which starts at two million dollars, is won by matching six numbers. These six numbers are chosen from a pool of 49 numbers. The jackpot is also a rolling jackpot.
  5. The Mega Millions – This is a nationwide lottery that also has a rolling jackpot for every game. For each game, players must match six numbers: five of which are chosen from a pool of 56, while the other one is chosen from a pool of 46. The cash prizes range around the hundreds of millions, which also rolls when a winner is not chosen during a draw. The Mega Millions drawings are on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  6. The Powerball – Another nationwide lottery game, this lottery also works by choosing six numbers which must be matched to a drawing. Players must choose five numbers from a pool of 59 numbers, and another one from 39. The cash prizes here also amount to hundreds of millions.

Other NJ Lottery Games

New Jersey residents may also offer many scratch-card games for lottery players who desire instant gratification. In these games, users can win cash prizes that range from a few dollars to hundreds of thousands, simply by scratching off an opaque covering to reveal the cash prizes to be won.

There are literally hundreds of variations of these scratch card lottery games to choose from, some of which are also nationwide. Some may work by matching cash prizes across a tic-tac-toe pattern, while others may simply require you to reveal the cash prize under the opaque covering. Depending on your penchant for games, you may find one that suits you and your lottery habits best.

The New Jersey lottery offers residents a great way to look forward to the end of a long day of work. Others may indeed play the lottery on the job during the night shift; either way, it is important to play the NJ lottery responsibly, no matter what time of day you choose to play.
